Safety & Emergency Guide

The Kumano region is calm, beautiful, and peaceful — but like all rural coastal areas in Japan, visitors and owners should stay aware of local conditions. This guide provides simple steps to stay prepared and safe.

1. Weather Awareness

Kumano weather can shift quickly, especially during:

  • typhoon season (June–October)
  • heavy rain periods
  • strong coastal winds

Check forecasts regularly:

  • Japan Meteorological Agency: jma.go.jp
  • Local city updates: municipal disaster alerts

2. Natural Hazards

Kumano consists of mountains, rivers, and coastline. Be aware of:

  • coastal surges during storms
  • landslides on steep rural roads
  • falling branches in forest areas
  • river rise after heavy rain

3. Earthquake Safety

Japan is seismically active. If an earthquake occurs:

  • Stay calm and move away from falling objects
  • Avoid beaches until tsunami safety is confirmed
  • Follow official alerts (NHK, J-Alert, city messages)

4. Medical Support

In emergencies, call 119 (ambulance & fire). English support is available in most cases.

Local clinics & hospitals are listed in the Horizon Coast directory.

5. Wildlife Caution

Kumano’s nature is rich. Occasional wildlife includes:

  • wild boar
  • tanuki (raccoon dog)
  • monkeys (rare near coast)

They usually avoid people. Do not feed or approach.

6. Property Safety for Owners

  • Check roofs and gutters after storms
  • Trim overgrown vegetation to reduce hazards
  • Secure loose items outdoors during wind warnings
  • Ensure gas, water, and electricity are properly shut off when vacant

7. Key Emergency Numbers

  • 119 — Fire & Ambulance
  • 110 — Police
  • 118 — Coast Guard

Horizon Coast also provides optional check-in support for property owners during major weather events.
