Access & Arrival

How to reach JAG Farms Lodge — simple, scenic, and part of the experience.

Matakana Island isn’t the sort of place you stumble upon by accident. Getting here is part of the story — harbour, coast, and sky all working together. Once your booking is confirmed, we will help you choose the best route and lock in the details.

1. Drive + Local Barge Crossing

This is the easiest option for guests with a rental car or local transport.

  • Step 1: Drive to Omokoroa Wharf (near Tauranga).
  • Step 2: Board the local island barge for a short harbour crossing to Matakana Island.

The island barge is a flexible, on-demand service rather than a fixed public timetable. The skipper runs when there are vehicles and people to move — sometimes early, sometimes late. Once your travel dates are confirmed, the lodge team will contact the captain directly, coordinate times, and confirm your crossing with you.

2. Lodge Pickup Service

For guests who prefer a no-stress arrival, we can arrange a hosted pickup. A lodge host will meet you at:

  • Omokoroa Wharf, or
  • Tauranga (Sulphur Point Marina)

From there you will transfer to the island by barge or by lodge boat, depending on weather, tide, and plan. We will confirm the exact meeting point and time before you travel.

3. Private Water Transfer

For groups already on the water, or guests wanting a direct harbour entry, we can organise a private transfer using the JAG Lodge Boat (Kingfisher 670 Powercat) or a trusted local operator.

This option is weather-dependent and must be arranged in advance, but it offers a spectacular arrival straight to the island landing point.

On Arrival at Matakana Island

When you step onto the island, your hosts will be there to meet you.

  • Luggage assistance from wharf to vehicle or lodge.
  • A short orientation to the island and lodge facilities.
  • A quick safety briefing covering tides, beach conditions, and local wildlife.
  • A welcome drink drawn from the garden, orchard, or local region.

Important Notes

  • Matakana Island is a remote rural environment. All access requires prior coordination with the lodge.
  • Weather and tide can influence exact timings. We monitor conditions and keep guests fully informed.
  • Please let us know in advance about any mobility or accessibility needs so we can plan appropriate support.

However you arrive, the goal is the same: a smooth, safe journey that already feels like part of your time at JAG Farms Lodge.
