Our Origin — Where Land, Sea, and Whānau Shape a Life

JAG Farms Ltd stands on the long, narrow spine of Matakana Island, a barrier island guarding Tauranga Harbour. It is a place of relentless sun, salt-wind pastures, isolation, boat-only access, Māori trust lands, stubborn resilience, and breathtaking beauty.

Farming on an island is never easy — everything arrives by barge, breaks at the worst time, costs a little more, and takes a little longer. But for the Gardiner whānau, this is home. This is where their story was forged.

John & Ave Gardiner — 35+ Years of Grit, Heart, and Stewardship

John Gardiner

Farmer. Fisherman. Problem-solver. A man with calm hands and a brain wired for practical mastery. Since 1983, John has worked Matakana’s land with discipline and ingenuity — carrying a dairy operation through droughts, storms, payout shifts, compliance changes, and the relentless logistics of island life.

Even during rehabilitation from injury, John continues to guide the farm with planning, foresight, and the hard-won knowledge of a lifetime.

Ave Gardiner

Born on Matakana Island into a Māori whānau whose land is held in multiple ownership, Ave carries generations of whakapapa connection to the whenua. She has farmed side-by-side with John for decades, and today — during his rehabilitation — she is milking alone, running the shed and the herd with strength, focus, and unshakeable commitment.

She is the quiet powerhouse of the operation — the embodiment of Matakana resilience.

Whānau Support Through the Years

Over past seasons, their children Ronnie and Maria, along with their partners, played vital roles in supporting the farm during key periods. Their contributions remain part of the Gardiner legacy, even as they now follow their own paths beyond the Island.

Through all changes, the heart of JAG Farms Ltd remains where it has always been: the partnership of John and Ave — two powerful, disciplined people who have carried their land, their herd, and their whānau through every season.

Farming on Matakana — Challenges That Build Character

Farming here means adapting daily. The Island’s reality includes:

  • Dry summers from December to February, when grass stops growing.
  • Salt air that shapes pasture and equipment alike.
  • Limited access to vets and contractors — every visit must be planned.
  • Everything arriving by barge, with time delays and extra costs.
  • Tides dictating when tankers collect milk from the farm.
  • A 20–45 minute crossing that demands perfect milk chilling and timing.
  • Compliance upgrades to aging infrastructure in a remote location.
  • The need to be your own mechanic, builder, and problem-solver.

Island farming turns ordinary farmers into engineers, strategists, and survivors. John and Ave have lived — and mastered — this rhythm for more than three decades.

Dairy Operations — Built on Ingenuity & Adaptation

To thrive under Matakana’s climate and constraints, the dairy operation has evolved over time:

  • The herd was shifted to autumn calving to align with pasture and rainfall.
  • Winter milk became the sustainable model for both climate and cashflow.
  • Herd numbers were adjusted to match grass growth and seasonal dry spells.
  • Culling and disciplined cost control kept the farm stable through downturns.
  • Every litre of milk is chilled to 4°C before the tide allows tanker pickup — a non-negotiable reality of island transport.
  • Compliance upgrades were completed with grit, planning, and outside support.

The farm is not large — roughly 130 hectares with 300–320 cows — but it is run with precision and a deep understanding of the land.

This is where the cream for JAG Farms Lodge originates: cream produced under real pressure, real work, and real pride.

Fruit, Produce & Island Goods

Alongside dairy, JAG Farms Ltd also contributes to the Mauao Coast and Horizon Coast ecosystem through:

  • Citrus from Island and regional orchards.
  • Kiwifruit and other orchard produce.
  • Seasonal goods and small-batch preserves.
  • Dried fruit supplies for baking and lodge pantry use.

This produce reflects the Island’s soil, sun, and sea air — flavours shaped by place.

Craft, Carving & Island-Made Merchandise

The Gardiner whānau and their extended family contribute handcrafted items for the JAG Farms Lodge and the wider Mauao Coast merchandise store, including:

  • Wooden carvings and small taonga-inspired pieces.
  • Driftwood art shaped by the harbour and surf.
  • Island trinkets and keepsakes.
  • Apparel and simple lodge-branded goods.

Every piece carries the identity of the Island and the families who shaped it.

JAG Master Rods — Built for Serious Watermen

Drawing on lifelong fishing heritage, JAG Farms Ltd supports the creation of JAG Master Rods — custom rods and accessories for coastal and harbour fishers. These rods represent:

  • Craftsmanship grounded in real fishing experience.
  • New Zealand fishing culture and coastal identity.
  • Rugged performance built for hard use and long life.

JAG Master Rods will be a signature item at JAG Farms Lodge.

New Zealand → Japan Supply Philosophy

JAG Farms Ltd supplies the Horizon Coast Lodge in Kumano, Japan with a range of products including, fresh, dried and preserved fruit, handmade goods, craft, and fishing gear. Every shipment carries a simple principle:

“What we send must honour the land it came from and the land it’s going to.”

This is cultural exchange done with respect — not mass production, but whānau-to-whānau connection.

Our Values

  • Whakapapa — Honouring the Māori trusts and the land that raised generations.
  • Resilience — Surviving drought, storms, injuries, isolation, and change.
  • Family — Supporting each other through every season of life.
  • Integrity — Compliance, quality, and honest work — always.
  • Adaptation — Shifting systems to match land and climate, not just industry trends.
  • Self-Sufficiency — Fix it yourself, make it work, never give up.
  • Stewardship — Leaving the land better for those who follow.

Future Vision

Looking ahead, JAG Farms Ltd & JAG Farms Lodge will:

  • Deepen partnership with The Horizon Coast network in Japan.
  • Document and celebrate the Gardiner whānau’s heritage and knowledge.
  • Develop product lines tied clearly to Island provenance.
  • Create cultural and agricultural experiences for Lodge guests.
  • Support the next generation of Island farmers and family enterprises.

JAG Farms Ltd stands not as a faceless corporation, but as a living bridge between Aotearoa, Japan and other countries.
