JAG Farms Ltd – Matakana Island

JAG Farms Ltd

Matakana Island, Aotearoa New Zealand
119 Matakana Road, Matakana Island, Bay of Plenty

Our Origin: JAG Farms Ltd stands on the long, narrow spine of Matakana Island — a barrier island guarding Tauranga Harbour. It is a place of sun, salt wind, Māori trust lands, boat-only access, stubborn resilience, and breathtaking beauty.

Where Land, Sea & Whānau Shape a Life

Farming on an island is never easy. Everything arrives by barge, breaks at the worst time, costs more, and takes longer. But for the Gardiner whānau, this is home.

  • Barrier island farming beside Tauranga Harbour
  • Salt-wind pastures and remote logistics
  • Land shaped by whānau, trust structures, and hard work
  • A story forged through resilience and practical mastery

John & Ave Gardiner

35+ Years of Grit, Heart & Stewardship

Since 1983, John and Ave have carried the daily reality of island farming through droughts, storms, payout shifts, compliance changes, and the relentless logistics of Matakana life.

  • John: farmer, fisherman, planner, mechanic, and problem-solver
  • Ave: Matakana-born, whakapapa-connected, still milking and running the shed
  • A partnership built on discipline, endurance, and care for the land
  • The living backbone of JAG Farms Ltd

Whānau Support Through the Years

Over past seasons, Ronnie and Maria, together with their partners, played important roles supporting the farm during key periods of work, growth, and pressure.

  • Family labour during expansion and demanding seasons
  • Children raised with the rhythms of farm and island life
  • Contributions that remain part of the Gardiner legacy
  • A family story still connected to the land

Farming on Matakana

Challenges That Build Character

Island farming turns ordinary farmers into engineers, strategists, and survivors.

  • Dry summers when pasture growth slows or stops
  • Salt air affecting equipment and infrastructure
  • Limited access to vets, contractors, and repair services
  • Everything planned around barge access and tides
  • The need to fix, build, adapt, and keep moving

Dairy Operations

Ingenuity & Adaptation

The dairy system has evolved to match Matakana’s climate, transport limits, and seasonal realities.

  • Autumn calving aligned to pasture and rainfall patterns
  • Winter milk as a practical climate and cashflow model
  • Herd numbers matched to grass growth and dry periods
  • Milk chilled to 4°C before tide-dependent collection
  • Approx. 130 hectares and 300–320 cows, run with precision

Fruit, Produce & Island Goods

Alongside dairy, JAG Farms Ltd supports whānau and local community through seasonal produce and farm-raised food when available.

  • Seasonal vegetable crops for marae and locals when needed
  • Beef and pork supplied to locals and marae
  • Food shaped by island soil, sun, and sea air
  • Small-scale supply based on care, timing, and need

Matakana Island Supply Philosophy

JAG Farms Ltd supplies whānau with meat and produce in season, when required, and when the land allows.

  • Respect before volume
  • Whānau-to-whānau connection
  • Food shared with memory, labour, and place attached
  • Not mass production — meaningful provision

“What we send must honour the land it came from and the people it goes to.”

Our Values

  • Whakapapa: Honouring the trusts and the land that raised generations.
  • Resilience: Surviving drought, storms, injury, isolation, and change.
  • Family: Supporting each other through every season.
  • Integrity: Compliance, quality, and honest work.
  • Adaptation: Shifting systems to match land and climate.
  • Self-Sufficiency: Fix it, make it work, never give up.
  • Stewardship: Leaving the land better for those who follow.

Future Vision

Looking ahead, JAG Farms Ltd and JAG Farms Lodge will continue building from the strength of land, story, food, and family.

  • Document and celebrate Gardiner whānau heritage and knowledge
  • Develop product lines tied clearly to island provenance
  • Create cultural and agricultural experiences for Lodge guests
  • Support future island farmers and family enterprises
  • Stand as a living bridge between Aotearoa and the wider world
