Original Haka Composition Workshop
An original haka composition honouring the guardians, ancestors, descendants and future generations of Tauranga Moana.
The Kaupapa
Ngā Kaitiaki o Tauranga Moana is being developed as an original haka for the Rangiwaea Living History Project.
The composition will acknowledge the enduring relationship between the people, whenua, islands, waterways and histories of Tauranga Moana. It will speak to the responsibility carried by each generation to protect, remember and pass forward what has been inherited.
This is not intended to be a haka belonging only to one age group, one generation or one moment in time. It is being composed so that tamariki, rangatahi, adults and kaumātua may each find their own place within it.
Guiding Principle
Simple enough for a five-year-old to perform.
Deep enough for a kaumātua to shape into tauparapara.
Powerful enough for everyone in between to make it their own.
Creative Charter
Every decision made during the development of this haka will be measured against one central principle:
Will this composition still speak with equal meaning to tamariki, rangatahi, adults and kaumātua fifty years from now?
If the answer is yes, it belongs.
Composition Brief
The haka will be created as one continuous emotional and narrative journey. Its power will come from clarity, discipline, collective pulse and purposeful movement rather than unnecessary complexity.
Traditional Structure
A traditional haka structure presented as one connected narrative rather than a collection of unrelated verses.
Approximately Three Minutes
Compact, purposeful and rhythmically compelling, with no section allowed to continue beyond its natural dramatic purpose.
Heavy and Deliberate
Strong, disciplined and relentless in pulse, while retaining space for breath, contrast, tension and release.
Across Generations
Clear enough to be remembered and performed by tamariki, while retaining meaning and depth for kaumātua.
Pulse, Breath and Cadence
Built through rhythm, repetition, vocal accents, collective breath, dynamic contrast and a memorable recurring foundation.
Authority in Every Setting
Capable of standing with equal authority on the marae ātea, at community gatherings and on the kapa haka stage.
Narrative Structure
The haka will follow five connected movements. Each movement will advance the story while remaining part of one uninterrupted composition.
Te Timatanga
The Beginning
The opening establishes place, identity and purpose. Tauranga Moana, the whenua, the people and the ancestral foundation of the haka are brought into view.
Te Hā
The Breath
Breath gives life to the composition. Individual voices, bodies and intentions gather into one shared pulse.
Te Karanga
The Call
The central call is sounded. It may be heard as the voice of the ancestors, the whenua, the moana and the living generation calling one another to stand, remember and respond.
Te Wehenga
The Separation and Transition
Responsibility moves from one generation to the next. The past is not abandoned; it is carried forward through those who now accept the mantle of guardianship.
Te Whakaotinga
The Completion
The haka resolves in unity, conviction and continuity. Completion does not represent an ending, but the reaffirmation of an enduring responsibility.

Creative Process
The composition will be developed progressively. The story and text will be established first, followed by pulse, vocal form, physical arrangement and full performance integration.
Story and Text
Establish the complete narrative, vocabulary, recurring phrases, meaning and cadence.
Pulse and Vocal Form
Shape the words to the intended tempo, breath, accents, repetitions and dynamic movement.
Tāne Arrangement
Lock the principal stance, footwork, actions, physical weight and rhythmic foundation.
Wāhine Accompaniment
Superimpose the supporting vocal and physical arrangement, adding movement, contrast, texture and emotional depth.
Integration and Trial
Bring all parts together, test the composition in performance and refine it through repetition, observation and collective response.
The Marae Test
Remove the stage, costumes, lighting and microphones. If the haka can stand barefoot on the whenua and still carry mana, it has succeeded.
Dedication
This composition forms part of the Rangiwaea Living History Project and is respectfully dedicated to the founding trustees of Tauwhao Te Ngare Trust, whose vision and stewardship helped secure the whenua for future generations.
The haka will honour the unbroken continuum of guardianship rather than elevate one generation above another.
The Rangiwaea Living History Project will preserve the names, lives and contributions of those who carried that responsibility.
