A Living Map
This chapter will gradually develop into a living map of Rangiwaea, connecting locations with people, photographs, oral histories and stories.
A place gains meaning through the people who lived there, the work that was carried out and the memories left behind.
The land remembers, even after generations have moved on.
An Island Rich in Stories
Every part of Rangiwaea carries history. Some places are well known. Others are remembered only within individual families. Both deserve to be preserved.
Homes of Earlier Generations
Houses, settlements and family homes where generations lived and grew.
The Working Land
Farms, gardens, fences, workshops and the land that sustained the community.
Beaches and Landing Places
Landing points, fishing grounds, boat routes and the waterways that connected the island.
Community Places
The marae, church, schools, community buildings and gathering places.
Old Routes
Walking tracks, farm roads, crossings and pathways used across the generations.
Places of Mana
Urupā, wāhi tapu and places that deserve particular care and respect.
Place Names
Place names are taonga. They often preserve the memory of ancestors, the character of the landscape, earlier activities and important historical events.
This project will gather historic place names, their pronunciation and meanings, ensuring they remain available for future generations.
A Landscape That Has Changed
The land, shoreline, homes and pathways have changed across time. Some have disappeared. Others have been rebuilt. Some survive only in memory.
Historic photographs, maps, interviews and family recollections allow those changes to become visible once again.
Connecting Every Place
Every location within the collection can connect to people, stories, photographs and recorded voices.
A visitor may click on a place, see historic photographs, listen to someone describe it, and read the stories connected with that landscape.

The long-term vision is for descendants to explore Rangiwaea digitally— to stand at any location, discover who lived there, what happened there and why it still matters today.
