JAG Farms Ltd – The Farm & Lodge

Farm & Food Philosophy

JAG Farms & JAG Farms Lodge exist because of one simple truth: good land, cared for over time, produces good kai and good people. Everything we serve, share, and teach is built on that idea.

Our Philosophy: Whenua first. People first. Kai with meaning. The lodge is not a staged experience — it is a working Island farm with a real table, real food, and real stories.

Rooted in the Land

JAG Farms sits on Māori land on Matakana Island, surrounded by harbour, dunes, pasture, and long stretches of sand.

  • Healthy soil, pasture, and water come first
  • Decisions are made with future generations in mind
  • Farm, forest, dunes, harbour, and birdlife are treated as connected

How We Farm

JAG Farms is a working dairy and mixed-farming operation — not a display farm or theme park.

  • Animal welfare and calm handling matter
  • Pasture rotation is carefully managed
  • Waterways, effluent, and bore use are protected
  • Technology supports experience, but does not replace it

Where Our Food Comes From

The best meals at the lodge are short-distance stories: paddock to plate, garden to pan, harbour to grill.

  • JAG Farms dairy
  • Island gardens and orchards
  • Local meat and poultry
  • Harbour and coastal kai when permitted
  • Allied farms and whānau produce

How We Cook

The kitchen is guided by Island farmhouse cooking — simple, generous, seasonal, and honest.

  • Simple over fancy
  • Fresh over processed
  • Fire, cast iron, grills, and smokers
  • Menus shaped by season and availability
  • Shared meals around a common table

A Day at the Table

Every stay is different, but food follows the rhythm of the day.

  • Breakfast with eggs, fruit, toast, yoghurt, tea, and coffee
  • Lunch with soups, salads, fish, meats, pickles, or relishes
  • Dinner built around a shared main dish and seasonal sides
  • Baking and hot drinks when the day calls for them

Dietary Needs

Dietary needs can usually be supported when discussed well in advance.

  • Please advise allergies before confirming your stay
  • Gluten-free, dairy-light, vegetarian, or no-pork preferences may be possible
  • Remote Island logistics mean last-minute changes can be difficult

JAG Farms is, at heart, a long table on an Island farm — a place where land, work, kai, and people come together in a way that feels honest and human.
