ABOUT TE KETE HUA O MATAKANA

Why Te Kete Hua?

A Discussion For Future Generations

Te Kete Hua o Matakana was created to explore a simple but important question:

How might Matakana continue to nourish its people over the next fifty years?

Throughout its history, Matakana has provided food, livelihoods, identity and connection for the people who call it home.

The island has supported generations through farming, fishing, gathering, stewardship and community effort.

Those traditions remain important today.

At the same time, changing economic conditions, population shifts, environmental pressures and future opportunities invite us to consider what comes next.

Not A Proposal

Te Kete Hua is not a development proposal.

It is not a political position.

It is not an investment offer.

It is not a predetermined plan.

It is simply a discussion framework.

A place where ideas can be explored, possibilities considered and future opportunities discussed openly.

Why Food?

Food has always been at the centre of community wellbeing.

It sustains families, creates employment, supports local businesses and strengthens resilience during uncertain times.

Across Aotearoa and around the world, communities are increasingly asking how food can be produced closer to home, using methods that support both people and the environment.

Matakana’s location, climate and history make it worthy of inclusion in that conversation.

Growing Opportunity

Te Kete Hua is ultimately about more than vegetables, fruit or market gardens.

It is about opportunity.

Opportunity for employment.

Opportunity for training.

Opportunity for whānau enterprise.

Opportunity for young people to remain connected to their whenua while building meaningful futures.

A Long View

The greatest projects are often measured not in years but in generations.

Te Kete Hua encourages long-term thinking.

The ideas presented throughout this project are intended to spark discussion about what Matakana may become, not only for today’s residents, but for children, grandchildren and generations yet to come.

Growing Food.
Growing People.
Growing Futures.
