Nau mai ki Te Kaupapa Hītori Ora o Rangiwaea — he kaupapa tupu tonu e whakakotahi ana i ngā kōrero, ngā whakaahua, ngā reo, ngā wāhi me ngā maharatanga o ngā tāngata o Rangiwaea.
Ko te whāinga, kia tiakina ngā taonga o mua, kia rangona ngā reo o nāianei, ā, kia tukuna atu ēnei kōrero ki ngā uri whakatipu.
He Hītori E Ora Tonu Ana

Its purpose is to protect the treasures of the past, record the voices of the present and carry these stories forward to the generations still to come.

This is not a completed archive or a history sealed behind glass. It is a living project that grows whenever a photograph is shared, a person is identified, a memory is recorded or a voice is preserved.
The life of Rangiwaea can be found in its homes, its marae, its farms, its waters, its whānau and the generations who have cared for the island.
The whenua is the foundation. The people are the heart. Their stories are the inheritance.

Not every story is found in a book or an official archive. Many remain in the memories of kaumātua, parents, aunties, uncles and whānau.
By sharing a memory, identifying someone in a photograph or correcting a name, date or location, every contributor becomes a kaitiaki of the history of Rangiwaea.

This project began with the understanding that many stories will be lost unless they are recorded now.
Documents can wait. People cannot.
For that reason, the early focus of the project will be the voices, memories and experiences of those who are still able to share them.
