Experiences & Activities

Matakana Island offers simple, grounding experiences shaped by tides, weather, and the rhythm of farm life. Nothing here is staged. Everything is real — the land, the people, the kai, and the work. These activities are a sample of what may be available depending on season, safety, and John & Ave’s schedule.

Please Note: Activities are not guaranteed. They depend on weather, tides, and the work of the farm. Safety and respect for the Island’s whānau and environment always come first.

Farm Experiences

JAG Farms is a working dairy operation and orchard environment. Guests may have the chance to observe or participate in light activities, always under guidance and only when appropriate.

  • Morning farm walk: Learn how the farm operates, from pasture to vat.
  • Dairy shed visit: Watch the milking process (viewing only unless invited).
  • Orchard & garden tour: Seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs, and composting.
  • Animal care basics: Calf feeding (seasonal), animal welfare stories, land stewardship.
  • Machinery & operations: A closer look at tractors, quad bikes, and farm logistics (observation only).

The level of involvement depends on safety, insurance, and the season — spring, for example, may be too busy for close-up visits.

Food & Kai Experiences

Matakana Island is known for honest kai — farm-grown, garden-picked, or fresh from the harbour. These experiences connect guests directly to that heritage.

  • Garden-to-table cooking: Harvest ingredients and prepare meals alongside Ave.
  • Bread & baking sessions: Lodge-style breads, biscuits, or seasonal treats.
  • Preserving & pickling: Learn simple methods used on the farm for generations.
  • Outdoor fire cooking: A rustic session when conditions allow — fish, vegetables, or meats.
  • Seafood preparation: Filleting, smoking, sashimi prep, or pāua/kina cleaning (seasonal and permitted only).

Coastal & Nature Activities

The Island is long, wild, and surrounded by ever-changing tides. Guests can explore safely with guidance and respect.

  • Beach walks: North and east coasts offer stunning empty stretches of sand.
  • Shellfish gathering: Where permitted, and only with local guidance.
  • Birdwatching: Harbour waders, migratory species, and coastal ecology insights.
  • Night sky viewing: Some of the darkest skies near Tauranga — perfect for stargazing.
  • Photography sessions: Landscape, farm, or coastal photography with support if needed.

Harbour & Fishing Activities

Fishing is a way of life in Tauranga Moana. When weather and safety allow, guests may be able to join a shore session or small-boat outing.

  • Shore fishing: Learn local styles — channels, tides, rigs, and bait.
  • Harbour small-boat trip: Limited capacity; available only with experienced operators.
  • Netting demonstration: Observational only, respecting tikanga and local rules.
  • Fish cleaning & prep: Filleting, smoking, and meal preparation back at the lodge.

All harbour and fishing activities are strictly weather- and safety-dependent. No activities will run in poor conditions or strong winds.

Culture & Community

Matakana Island is home to a strong Māori community with deep roots, traditions, and connections across Tauranga Moana. Any cultural experiences must be arranged respectfully and only when supported by local whānau.

  • Story evenings: Whakapapa, history, and personal kōrero shared in the lodge.
  • Local visits: By invitation only and never guaranteed — dependent on whānau.
  • Historical walk-through: Learn about pā sites, dunes, and harbour landmarks.
  • Music & kōrero nights: Shared instruments, songs, stories, and reflection.

Simple Free-Time Activities

  • Read or relax in the lodge lounge.
  • Walk the farm tracks at your own pace (with guidance on boundaries).
  • Enjoy sunrise and sunset from the decks.
  • Sketch, journal, or photograph the changing landscape.
  • Unplug, unwind, and breathe — the Island’s greatest gift.

All experiences at JAG Farms Lodge are shaped by respect — for the land, the farm, and the people who have cared for this place for generations.
