Lyric Logic™ is about the craft of turning stories, emotions and ideas into lyrics that can live inside music.
It is not simply about rhyming words.
It is about understanding what a song is trying to say, who is saying it, and why the words matter.
From Performer To Lyricist
For more than four decades, music has been part of my life.
I have performed in bands throughout New Zealand, the Pacific and Japan, sung hundreds of other people’s songs, written educational material, recorded voice work and collaborated with musicians, composers and producers across different projects.
Over time I began to understand that every strong song carries more than melody.
It carries story.
The Guy Fawkes Musical
One of the most significant lyric writing chapters of my life came through a collaboration with English composer and producer Ben Durkin on the concept musical Guy Fawkes.
Working from historical material, music demos and scene references, I became the primary lyricist for the first concept album.
That work taught me that lyrics must serve character, emotion, timing, phrasing and story.
Story
A lyric begins with meaning. Before the words arrive, the story must be understood.
Character
The singer is never just a voice. They are someone with a reason to sing.
Music
Every word must fit the melody, rhythm, breath and emotional movement of the song.
