This chapter gathers, identifies, explains, connects and preserves the many forms of media that carry the living history of Rangiwaea.
More Than a File
The value of a media file extends beyond what can be seen or heard. Behind it are names, relationships, places, occasions and memories known by the people who were there.
When that knowledge is not recorded, faces, voices and places may become unidentified, and the meaning of the material can gradually disappear.
Without context, media remains only a file. With its story, it becomes a legacy.
Rangiwaea Life Captured in Image, Sound and Record
The collection may include whānau photographs, video of gatherings and work, oral histories, recordings of waiata, maps, letters, official documents, notices, newspaper material and other digital records.
Historic material and records created today are equally important. The files being made now will become historical sources for future generations.
Faces, Places and Occasions
Photographs of ancestors, whānau, homes, farms, boats, the marae, the church, work and community gatherings.
Movement, Sound and Activity
Video of hui, journeys, farm work, whānau occasions, waiata, haka, creative activity and everyday life.

Video captures movement, voice, sound, working methods and relationships between people and place. It can preserve details that cannot be fully conveyed through a single still image.
The collection can include whānau video, farm activity, gatherings, journeys, waiata, haka, creative work and community occasions.
Preserving the Human Voice
A person’s voice is a unique record. Pronunciation, humour, waiata, emotion and the rhythm of remembrance can preserve knowledge that written words cannot fully carry.
Recordings may include interviews, inherited stories, whakapapa, place names, childhood memories, working life and recollections of people who have passed.
The Traces Left on Paper
History can be found within letters, books, certificates, lists, minutes, property plans, public notices and administrative records.

Who? Where? When? What Is the Context?
These questions are the beginning of preserving every type of media: Who created it? Who appears within it? Where and when was it made? What was happening? Who holds the original?
Even when every answer is not known, the information currently available should be recorded. Another descendant may be able to add further detail later.
Identifying People, Voices and Places
Many photographs, videos and recordings remain within boxes, albums, tapes and older devices while some names have already been lost.
Careful sharing among whānau and the wider community may allow faces, voices, places and events to be identified again.
An identification can be marked as confirmed or possible, preserving a clear distinction between established knowledge and an informed suggestion.
Caring for Original Media
Historic photographs, audio tapes, videotapes and documents may be fragile, faded, damaged or difficult to read and play.
High-quality scanning and digital transfer can create secure copies while the original item remains under the care and ownership of the whānau.
Restoration, Editing and Authenticity
Digital restoration may reduce dust, cracks, noise or fading so that material can be seen or heard more clearly. The integrity of the original record must nevertheless be protected.
People, words, sound, colour or details that were not present should not be invented or added to the historical record.
It should be made clear when material has been restored, edited, shortened or colourised. The untouched master file should remain the primary record.
Sensitive Media
Not every item is suitable for public display. Material may relate to tangihanga, urupā, grief, children, private whānau matters, whakapapa, culturally sensitive locations or confidential information.
Permission, context, mana and the wishes of those represented must be considered before publication.
Material may be preserved for whānau only, for an approved group, or for release at a later time.

This chapter can develop into a searchable digital media library organised by name, whānau, place, date, media type and subject.
Photographs, video, oral histories, documents and maps can be connected to personal stories, locations and the historical timeline.
